Lyrics[]

Velvet Elvis - watchin' over me
Steer me clear of heartache - drive me wide of misery
Velvet Elvis - with a black light in the dome
You'll be riding shotgun - whenever I leave home

We staggered out of the sunlight into the darkness of the bar
Leaving the hum of the road outside in the car
Inside it was very still; there was no soul to be found
Just a few dead men drinking alone so quiet they were loud
We sat down next to the jukebox, it said "out of order"
You got up to buy some stale pistachios for a quarter
As you walked away from me I saw the stripe on your back was yella
'N suddenly heard "heartbreak hotel" when that old jukebox did crackle

Velvet Elvis - watchin' over me
Steer me clear of heartache - drive me wide of misery
Velvet Elvis - with a black light in the dome
You'll be riding shotgun - whenever I leave home

The wind whips through my hair and dirt gets in my eyes
Whenever I rub them with the back of my hand so you won't see me cry
It's a long way back to my home and away from all your lies
But I got the wheel and a velvet painting and the way to say goodbye

You came back with a smirk on your face 'n nuts stuck in your teeth
So I got up to buy a shot of crown hoping for relief
Chasing it with a glass of beer I made out in the gloom
A picture of Elvis done on velvet sanctifying the room
There was Jesus wearing his crown and a horse's head
Two little kids with saucer eyes and one of Wilma and Fred
But I only had eyes for the king, though all the others were fine
Rendered on velvet, "Love Me Tender", I had to make it mine

Stumbling to the table, colliding with your sneer - the dim light
Glinting off the silver in your eyebrow, nose, and ear
And so I shrugged my shoulders, told you to go to hell
aAnd asked the barman 'bout that painting and if'n he would sell
So i says, "hey mister, how much for the Elvis?
There's something about it, all that soft midnight black velvet."
He just took one look at me, caught the whiff of desperation
And says, "Hey little lady, that's o.k., you just take it with my blessing."

Velvet Elvis - watchin' over me
Steer me clear of heartache - drive me wide of misery
Velvet Elvis - with a black light in the dome
You'll be riding shotgun - whenever I leave home
